Healing only happens in relationship

At Ecology of the Human, I offer guided walk & talk ecotherapy sessions—a simple but powerful way to work through stress, life transitions, anxiety, or emotional overwhelm while moving through natural environments. Ecology of the Human

Ecology of the Human explores the relationship between mind, body, environment, and meaning. We believe healing is not only psychological—it is ecological.

You are not separate from your environment. You are part of it.

These sessions take place outdoors in local green spaces around Seattle, where the nervous system can settle, thoughts can loosen, and perspective can return.

Why it works

Humans evolved in relationship with the natural world. When we return to it—even briefly—something in the body recalibrates.

Walk & Talk sessions can help:

  • Reduce stress and physiological tension

  • Support emotional regulation through rhythmic walking

  • Improve clarity and decision-making

  • Ease conversational pressure compared to face-to-face office settings

  • Increase feelings of groundedness and presence

There is nothing you need to “do right.” The pace is slow, conversational, and responsive to your comfort

Walk & Talk Ecotherapy combines traditional therapeutic conversation with the grounding effects of being in nature. Instead of sitting in an office, we walk slowly through parks, trails, or quiet green spaces while exploring what’s present in your life.

Nature becomes part of the process—not just a backdrop, but an active co-regulator.

This approach is especially supportive for people who feel:

  • Mentally stuck or overwhelmed

  • Disconnected from themselves or others

  • Burned out from work or caregiving

  • Anxious, restless, or overthinking

  • In a life transition or identity shift

  • More at ease thinking while moving than sitting still

Who This Is For

Walk & Talk ecotherapy is suitable for adults seeking support with:

  • Anxiety and stress management

  • Burnout and emotional exhaustion

  • Relationship or life transitions

  • Creative blocks or lack of direction

  • Grief and loss

  • Reconnecting with meaning or purpose

No prior therapy experience is required.

How it works

How Ecotherapy Supports Nervous System Regulation

Research shows that both nature exposure and walking independently support mental health, but together they create a powerful regulatory environment for the nervous system.

Studies have found that spending time in natural environments can reduce anxiety, improve mood, and decrease stress-related rumination. Even short periods in nature—sometimes as little as 10 minutes—can lead to measurable improvements in emotional state and physiological stress response.

Movement adds another layer. Walking is a rhythmic, bilateral activity that naturally supports regulation of the stress response system. When combined with natural settings, “green exercise” has been shown to enhance feelings of restoration, calm, and psychological wellbeing more than indoor movement alone.

From a nervous system perspective, these effects are thought to involve a shift away from chronic stress activation (sympathetic arousal) toward states associated with recovery, digestion, and social engagement (parasympathetic activity).

In everyday terms, walking in nature helps the mind slow down, reduces internal noise, and creates conditions where thoughts and emotions can reorganize more clearly and with less effort.
